CertainTeed Corporation’s Solar Rooftop Partnership with NJR Clean Energy Ventures Boosts Sustainability Efforts at Company’s New Jersey Distribution Center

A new rooftop solar project in Berlin, N.J. will generate more than 870 kilowatts of clean, renewable energy, thanks to a partnership between CertainTeed Corporation and NJR Clean Energy Ventures (NJRCEV), a subsidiary of New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR).

As part of a 20-year lease and concurrent Power Purchase Agreement with CertainTeed, NJRCEV is installing a state-of-the art solar roof utilizing 300,000 square feet of space atop the company's Berlin facility which is used as a Northeast distribution center for its fiberglass insulation products.

The roof will feature UNI-SOLAR® thin-film solar laminates, which will provide the dual benefit of weather protection and clean energy. The system is designed to provide nearly 90 percent of the building's electric needs and help transform the facility into a green building by eliminating more than 800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The roofing system was developed in conjunction with United Solar, a leading global manufacturer of UNI-SOLAR brand light-weight, flexible, thin-film, low impact and low profile solar panels. The project is expected to be operational by January 2011 and will create up to 25 direct and indirect jobs in the state.

"The Berlin solar roof project demonstrates the true strength of partnerships when it comes to mitigating the impact on the environment," says Peter Dachowski, president and CEO of CertainTeed Corporation. "CertainTeed is wholeheartedly committed to serving as a responsible steward of the environment and our community by incorporating sustainable practices in the design of our buildings and manufacture of our building products."

CertainTeed also partnered with United Solar in the development of the company's EnerGen™ photovoltaic roofing system. The system features integrated UNI-SOLAR thin-film laminates that seamlessly integrate with traditional asphalt roofing shingles. CertainTeed also recently launched AirRenew™, a revolutionary gypsum board product that improves indoor air quality and Sustainable Insulation™, a fiberglass insulation product manufactured with high recycled and renewable content including a formaldehyde-free binder.
